You may want to check the archives on this topic. Lots of info there. I believe the E34 Touring was sold from '92-'95. Sales figures were somewhere between 6-7,000, nationally. A 530iT was also sold (small V-8) in the later years.
Here's my story -
I have a '92 525iT with the non-Vanos motor. Horsepower is adequate, by no means is it sporting. Ride is very quiet and smooth. You will get a bit more road noise from the rear as the car can be an echo chamber and the rest of the car is quiet.
A/C works well except if you are in Texas in the summer and your car is painted black. Like mine. Tinting all the windows helps.
I paid $15K for the car in 10/98. It had 55K miles then. Almost 90K now.
I have changed the water pump (a common malady), brake pads and shocks all around. I also upgraded to 17" wheels with Dunlop SP9000's. Handling is much improved. Haven't taken it much over 100mph. Well, maybe :)
Mobil 1 (15W50) has been changed every 4-5K miles.
Engine very smooth.
The negatives - interior quality is questionable. Headliner sag and door panels coming apart is common. They say it is more prevalent in hot climates. Also, the dual panel sunroof is an often mentioned point of problems. Mine broke a fews months ago. $2K to fix.
Overall, I enjoy the style and utility of the design. There aren't that many on the road. Fuel economy is around 22MPG for driving around the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
My next step is installing a supercharger that I ordered last week. It is my project for spring break.
