When the thermo is closed, water still is pumped through the block by the water pump. The thermo closes the output to the radiator.

: The water needs to be pumped through the engine and heat-exchanger. I think if the thermostat is closed, no water flows, so the heat in the exchanger is quickly exhausted. Perhaps on these cars it's different. I suppose there might be some way to have a bypass that'd feed the exchanger even when the thermostat was closed.

: I was thinking there might be some air in the system, and the impellor in the pump would occasionally cavitate. Don't know... I've got an appointment tomorrow AM to have it fixed.
