Good question, not easily answered! hehehehe My car now is the 540iA (94). I previously owned an 89 535 stick. Which do I enjoy better? I've got to say, "I'll always prefer stick over auto!" But I fell in love with my current ride (both were the Orient blue, full load), and unfortunately the 94's ONLY came in Automatic. It is an "Adaptive" 5 speed which does adjust to the drivers habits, so it is not like a "regular-run-of-the-mill" tranny. I've put it a Dinan chip and induction tube. It already had a triflow exhaust (I think). At highway speeds, when I stomp the peddle, "THIS THING REALLY KICKS ASS - I'M GLAD IT IS AN AUTO!"

In conclusion to your post though, this is my suggestion: "If you are going to get a smaller motored car, stick with a standard. If you intend on purchasing a 540, an automatic is perfectly safe (and still loads of fun!).

Good luck.......... either way, you can't go wrong................."Cuz it's a BMW!"
