I noticed the same thing on my E34 when I bought it. The dealer said the speedo was set to read slightly high to avoid liability for speeding tickets. In my case the speedo reads 2-3 mph higher than the OBC, which is dead on.
Since the speedo reads high, the ODO will also show a bit more than actual mileage.
'90 535i(m) 218K+ miles and still going strong...
'88 325 (m) 134K+ and going strong too...
