A couple of thoughts - assuming you have separate left and right controls, are both sides blowing cold? If so, it is less likely to be the valve unit. If one side is warmer than the other, it's probably the valve and/or pump.

I think the pump can be disconnected easily. With the ignition on but engine off and heat at max. setting, see if you can hear the pump fire up when you plug in the connector. Don't know how to diagnose the valve unit but see if it has a similar connector that you can test with.

A new pump (for a 535, at least) is around $110 and a valve unit around $125. Would you believe the hose from the valve to the firewall is around $35?? That's BMW pricing for you!
