The experts say to stick with BMW antifreeze. Local Dealer wants $20/gallon.

How many miles on your car and what's the condition of your hoses, water pump and thermostat?

As an easy test, squeeze the hose that leads to the aux pump with and without the engine running. It should be under pressure so you can at least confirm that coolant is going through it, or trying to. On my 535 it tees off from the top hose so is pressurized when the engine is running. Don't know about the V8s.
