As I recall when I first registered my 91 535 when I bought it in late 1994 - the registration fee is related to the price you paid for the car. The DMV required documentation of the purchase price. (You couldn't just say you paid $10,000!) I just tried to get you some more specifics on the DMV web site, but they didn't have this information. Under the section about buying a used vehicle, they do mention a "Use Tax" which is based on the purchase price. Perhaps this is what I remember paying. Here is the url: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/faq/regfaq.htm#TAXES

Anyway, the good news is that the registration cost will go down every year as the car depreciates.
Good Luck,
Alfred
