How can I tell if the bushings are worn out??? (archive)

I own a 525ia 93' with 73k miles on it.. The car has had no suspension work done on it, I was thinking of replacing the shocks and bushings real soon.. How can I tell if the thrust arm bushing is worn out?? I do feel a shimmer between 65-70 mph, and the steering feels dead at these speeds, but I think this is just a wheel alignment issue..
