: First of all, thanks to everyone who responded. I got the MBQ DSD 213 component set in the front (kick panel and door pillar) and set of MBQ 5.25" coaxes in the rear. And the sound is...well, it's a little better. But everyone was right. I need a power amp. The MBQs are getting the already-crossed-over output from the BMW amp and I know they'll sound better with the right signal and more power. I know, I know, I should have done all my research BEFORE getting the speakers. Live and learn...
: My budget for the amp is $300-$350. I'm considering Alpine MRV-F407, Eclipse 3640, and Rockford Fosgate Punch 400a4. Any experiences you'd like to share? My research indicates that they're all good products with arguably the Alpine being the best (and most$$$) and the Eclipse and RF pretty close but different - Eclipse more HiFi, RF more pure power.
: I've looked at all of the archived digests from Bob H and have a pretty good understanding of the wiring in my 94 540i. I've even taken the BMW amp out and checked it over. It doesn't seem like installing the new amp myself is an impossible task. Tedious, yes. Difficult, no. Am I deluding myself?
: If I'm looking at an amp in the 40-50Wx4 channel range will I need to run a new power line from the battery or will the power line that goes to the BMW amp suffice?
: Will I need to worry about heat if I put the new amp in the same location as the BMW amp? Of course I would have to mount the amp on a piece of plywood (or something similar) and mount the plywood to the BMW amp's bracket.
: Other than the wiring issues that Bob has discussed, what else should I be aware of?
: If I pay for installation, what is a fair price? I can't figure out if it should be more than a non-BMW install because of how wierd the BMW setup is or if it should be less because the whole wiring harness is easily accessible.
: Oh, by the way, I'm sticking with the stock Pioneer head unit and changer. It works fine and I like how it's integrated into the dash display.
: Thanks everyone,
