Switching from 90 wt oil to synthetic just made the sound more apparant, that's also why it gets worse after driving, the oil warms up and thins out. I dont think that's normal. I use Redline MTL and my '89 has 116k with no gear noise or rattle except when the car is shut off. Then it klunks for a half-second when the motor turns off. This I read is normal for manual trannies. Mabye your gears are worn more than average.
