: Also, I'm planning on replacing the brake pads. My mechanic says I about 1.5 millimeters above specs on the rotors. Would this be enough clearance to just replace the pads until the next brake job (when I plan to replace the rotors)? Is replacing the pads an easy job? What parts/tools do I need to do the job?

Look on my 535i Website in the Tech section on how to brakes and tools needed. It's likely very similar if not the same. Always do the rotors if you don't want grinding and squeaking noises. Ate rotors should be about $125/pair mail order for the 540i.
