: WHEN THE CAR IS COLD, IT WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF 1ST FOR A QUARTER MILE REGARDLESS OF WHAT SPEED THE CAR IS TRAVELING. AFTER THE FIRST SHIFT IT PERFORMS CORRECTLY UNTIL THE NEXT TIME THE CAR SITS FOR MORE THAN 6 HOURS. THE MECHANIC HAS PUT THE CAR ON 2 DIFFERENT MACHINES TO TEST IT AND BOTH COMPUTERS FIND NO PROBLEM.
: ANY HELP? PLEASE ADVISE.
Bruce, You may want to try this 1st before going to the expense of trans. Service. I have a '95 740i, which I believe has the same transmission as your 540i, with lifetime fluid. Right? Very $$$ Disconnect the battery for a couple of hours, or even over night. This transmission is an adaptive one. It stores a memory of shift patterns, adapting to the way one drives. The only way to clear the memory is to disconnect the battery. My wife drives ours all the time, very easy, if you know what I mean. It would hardly ever go into 1st when I would drive it. After we had the engine replaced, I took it for a test drive before signing off on the work. It drove like a different car, shifting like I thought it should. I asked the Technician about it and that's when he told me about the memory thing. Bad thing is, she's been driving it for the last 4 months and its back the way it was before the engine transplant. Hope this helps. Good luck
On another note, the trans. wants to stay in lower gears when cold to speed engine warm up due to the Clean Air Act. I think this is set in the eprom. Ours will stay in 1st until about 30-35 mph when cold before going to 2nd. After warm up, it shifts fine.
