I've been driving a '92 525iT since 10/98. I purchased one with 55K miles for $15,200. I now have around 90K miles.
I may be incorrect, but I believe the motor designation is M50. The '92 motors just don't have the Vanos systems of the later years.
I would take a very close look at one with 110K miles and a slow moving sunroof. My sunroof moved quite slowly until it died. I am looking at around $2K to fix it.
These cars also have a few problems with the dash instrumentation. My speedo and tach do not function correctly until the car is started with a warmed-up interior. Good in summer, not now.
Check if the plastic water pump was replaced with a metal one. Not a difficult job but a shop can charge a bit on this one.
Ask if the front suspension & steering has been maintained. My steering is vague and wanders on uneven roads. Thrust arms are on order for my Touring.
Horsepower is not abundant on the '92. but it is adequate for getting around town. I have a reservation with my local BMW wizard for a Spring Break supercharger installation.
I would offer a bit lower than $13K. Offering $12K would leave some in reserve for the inevitable repairs.
