: I have found a 1993 525i with 71,000 miles. I am truly a BMW novice. I have always bought used japanese cars and have had great luck (pre-depreciated, reliable vehicles). I'm leery of the perhaps undeserved BMW reputation for being finicky, unreliable cars. Anyone care to set me straight? Thanks.

Rick,
I don't think you will get too many replies from this board saying the e34 is finicky or unreliable. The e34 is probably one of the best built and most reliable model lines BMW has produced. Aside from some questionable design decisions (like plastic radiator and WP parts!) they are generally bullet-proof cars...IF THEY ARE MAINTAINED. Make sure whatever you buy is documented and all service is up to date. They aren't like an old Corolla where all you need to do is drive it, fuel it, and forget it, but if you keep after the ez stuff, they will outlast just about anything out there. I still get compliments on my '89, and it definitely looks/drives better than a Corolla! Good luck--do your homework, test drive it and have all items checked--let us know what you decide.
