The reprogramming was to remap the fuel injection/ignition timing to alleviate deposit buildup on the oxygen sensors. This may have meant decreasing the fuel mixture ratio and/or retarding the ignition timing, either of which would result in lower performance (retarding the timing would also decrease fuel mileage). Take it in for the leakdown test before getting the JC chip, however, since using an aftermarket chip could void the extended engine warranty.
