Both "under" and "over" pressure in the system, or a bad connection in that circuit will drop out the compressor without informing the HVAC control - that's why the light(s) stayed on.
Other than the obvious incorrect refrigerant charge, a problem with the electric (aux) fan or its resistor could cause over-pressure.
I have had this problem due to a bad connection. There are some details of this on my web site below.
