Omega,
I have 18" on 235/40/18 tires and in less than a year, I've replaced three wheels due to potholes. I had 17" on my other BMW and kept them on for almost 2 years and didn't experience any problems.
It seems like 17" would be a more cost effective option. That's just my opinion though.
