The service bulletin about the leakdown testing states, to the effect, that the test sequence is to be performed for either of the following:
1. The customer complains of an excessively rough idle.
2. It is evident that the customer will lose confidence in his BMW without the test.
With these two ideas in mind, I took my 1994 530ia (72,000 miles, 2 days short of the warranty expiration) into my dealer and told them:
1. The car seems to sometimes idle kind of roughly (although it did not really).
2. I am aware of the sulphur issue and will not have confidence in my vehicle without at least some sort of reassurance about my engine, such as would be provided by the test. I further stated that I would likely trade it in for another make of car if I did not receive some sort of reassurance.
Ther performed the test and to my surprise, it failed on one cylinder. Hence, I got the new short block. Good luck!!!!!
