I drive a '90 520i.Iused to own an '84 520i e28 that gives out heat at the trans tunnel as you described. But the heat doesn't actually radiate to the occupants as the A/c is on.You have to touch the carpet at the tunnel to feel the heat.
However my e34 do not have this heat problem at the tunnel at all.Everything is cool to the touch. There is very thick foam padding under the carpet.I don't think mine has heat shield under the car either.Heat shields are there to cover the exhaust mufflers.

: I have a auto 535I 89 and there seems to be a lot of heat coming into the interior of the car from the transmission tunnel. 535I owners, do your cars feel hot as well? I can feel all around the transmission tunnel and it is realy warm. The car doesn't overheat. Are there supposed to be heat shields under the car in the trans tunnel, I can't see any on mine.

: Cheers
