I had kind of a similar experience - I had my block replaced and my radio also didn't work - the power cord had come loose from the back of it. They just had to plug it back in. About the shimmy, it is probably the infamous "E34 shimmy". This is due to wear of the front control arm bushings. Bavarian Autosport sells the complete control arm with bushing and ball joint for about $150 per side.
