I experienced this on 92 525i (M50 using Valeo alternator) - flickering lights occur regardless of RPM. Fixed 100% by replacing the voltage regulator/brush assembly - will cost you $75 plus ~ 1 hour of your time (be sure you have a Reilly's). Hope this helps.
