Don,
Thanks for the info. Actually I am buying the car from a Lexus dealer. The previous owner decided it was time for a GS400.
I asked the Lexus dealer to find out about the leakdown test. They have a good relationship with the BMW dealer down the street. If the block hasn't been replaced, I will be getting the leakdown test on Tuesday or Wednesday.
This raises a question:
If the block hasn't been replaced and the car passes the leakdown test, am I in trouble?
The reason I ask is because the car is a 95 and the extended engine warranty will expire in 8 months. Will it just be a matter of time before the engine compression goes? It only has 53,000 miles.
I live in NJ and I believe the car has always been in NJ also. What is the sulfur content in NJ?
In a wierd way, I am keeping my fingers crossed that the block has been replaced or the engine fails the leakdown. This way I know that I won't have any headaches.

: Hang on to your wallet. If I remember correctly, only a dealer can provide a key and they are over US$100. If you are purchasing the car from a dealer, ask them to provide keys as part of the sale price. There should be two main keys, a valet key and a "wallet" key.
: BTW, has the engine had a leak down check or has the block been replaced? Perhaps a dumb question, but are you aware of the problems with BMW V8 engine blocks of that vintage. if not check the archives and look for information on 530's There is a comprehensive site that covers all you need to know.
