'89 E34 Auto a wise purchase? (archive)

I work for a Saab dealer and we recently had an '89 535i traded in. The car is one owner and is in very good shape with 96K on the odometer. After looking through all the current postings, I didn't notice anyone with an automatic. Is this because they are unreliable or is it that most people prefer a 5-speed? I own an '89 Saab 9000S now which has actually been pretty reliable so I'm understandably a little nervous about stepping up to BMW which will most likely cost a lot more to repair then my 9000 (I can get parts at cost and service cheap.) Thanks for any suggestions or opinions. By the way, I should be able to pick the car up for $7000.
