Sorry to hear that you are having problems with this car.
You mentioned that the instrument lights turned on; were you driving during daytime with lights off when this happened? If so, perhaps you have an electrical issue, not a fuel problem. Do you have an ETM (electrical troubleshooting manual) for the E34?
A colleague of mine had very odd problems with her 525i. It turned out there was a problem with the DME ground points. Ask your mechanic to check, clean and retighten all system grounds. I'm wondering if the oil warning was caused by the floating ground causing logic levels to get all messed up.
