Steve,
These BMW's have the ZF transmissions. They are unreliable if not cared for. If you look after it, they are onw of the best transmissions around. Important: Do not rev the engine in P or N, otherwise you will blow the clutch A packs. If you have to idle the car in P or N for long periods of time, switch the car of for 30 mins then start it and let it idle without going to any gears. Replace the fluid every 6-10months and filter in the Transmission every 12months. If you do these it will last forever.
