: I work for a Saab dealer and we recently had an '89 535i traded in. The car is one owner and is in very good shape with 96K on the odometer. After looking through all the current postings, I didn't notice anyone with an automatic. Is this because they are unreliable or is it that most people prefer a 5-speed? I own an '89 Saab 9000S now which has actually been pretty reliable so I'm understandably a little nervous about stepping up to BMW which will most likely cost a lot more to repair then my 9000 (I can get parts at cost and service cheap.) Thanks for any suggestions or opinions. By the way, I should be able to pick the car up for $7000.
You won't have any problems, it is a solid car. However, it does have the M20 Motor which is only a 12v. When you step up to the M50 motor you now get the 24v and you will notice the difference, and if you can afford the M50 with double vanos I think came out in'94 it is even quicker. I suggest you drive all 3 and see what I am talking about, otherwise you may be disappointed on the M20 motor performance. Remember the E34 body style was head of the M50 motor, so early production came with M20 motors until the factory could supply the M50 and then everything changed to M50 then double vanos was the last major improvement.
