: I am interested in buying a '91 525 or '91 535 but I am having a problem deciding which one. I would like to know which of cars has the best combo. My number one priority would be reliability and then power and performance upgrades. I really like the 535 but am hesitant due to its older tech build. Are there any common problems to look out for them? TIA. Hoping to join in on the discussion on my e34 as I decide which to buy. B

The 525 probably has the 12v M20 engine and its a real dog, bullett proof but slow. I have a '92 24v M50 and its a sled until it gets to 3200RPM's but off the line it's a sled. Nothing wrong with the 535i I wished I bought that at the time. The block and everything is solid and sounds alot more "throaty" and yes it has alot more power and torque. Remember this is the platform BMW has so much experience in and built the "M" version from here, and you can continually upgrade more performance off this then the M20.
