Leave the car on automatic "E" and you can start out in first gear kind of like a sports car. When you start the car it will say "EP" (electronic park), when you shift the car out of park into either the first second or third gears, it will automaticaly go into "S" mode. As far as making the car go faster, I really don't know what the actual differences in speeds may be. I like to use this sometimes when i'm on the highway in "ED" and I need to get up some really nice torque to pass a car, I downshift into 3 and step on it!
