Replacing muffler still loud (archive)

Replaced the muffler on a 92 525 m50 engine, but did not replace the resonator. The replacement muffler was a ANSA. Car still seems to be louder than it should be but not as loud as it was with the old muffler. Does the resonator have any effect on how loud the car is at idle or at throttle. Anybody have any experiences let me know.
