polishing compound screwed me over! (archive)

it's a lovely spring day--so i decided to wash and wax the car...
before waxing, i hit a few scratches and bug spatters with some
very fine liquid polishing (not rubbing) compound...

there was one little scratch between the bottom of the driver's
side window and the top of the door handle that had been bugging
me for a while--so i rubbed it ever so lightly for just a few seconds...
BIG MISTAKE!

the car is sterling silver (original paint in excellent to perfect condition)
and i now have a dark gray spot about 1 inch wide by half an inch high...
WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED?! i was told over the phone by Jon S.
(who posts here every once in a great while) that i probably went through
the clear coat...i have no idea how, because i've been using compound for
years with no problems whatsoever...

so...people...what can i do to fix the problem? is there a way to hit the spot
with clear coat and wet sand to feather the edges into the existing clear coat?
or is my only recourse to have the whole door sprayed or have it pinstriped?

i would gladly accept the opinions of any professionals out there--and if you're
in tennessee, you might get some work out of it...
