I owned a 88 535is since 90' and I have to say that I've been very impress with it performance and maintenance. With the right upgrades, this car is the Ultimate Driving Machine. I was told that the e34 535i is a bit heavier and the interior (door panel trim comes off when old) is not so great. The e34 is a nice looking car, but depends on your preference. The e28 535is is a classy looking car. I hope this help with your findings.
