Interesting. A little rubbing with polishing compound should NOT go though the clear coat.

As someone who spent several years working in a detail shop, I might offer up a few ideas.

- You mentioned using polishing compound before. Candidly, I would never use any compound on the car. You can clear most everything with a cleaner/wax. I would ONLY use compounds AFTER a cleaner/wax with significant pressure did not remove the scratch. You'd be surprised how much you can get out with any reasonable product.

- I would NEVER use an apprasive to remove bug stuff. Get a product for that OR just use a little paint thinner on a rag. Paint thinner is a great, everyday detailer solvent. Pretty harmless on most things. Be sure to re-wax. Oh yes...PAINT thinner, not laquer thinner. Laquer thinner is another great detailers cleaner but it can have some really disasterous side effects!!

- Regarding your spot, have you tried a gentle circular motion with a cleaner wax? You might be able to "vinette" the edges a bit and soften the appearence. I might try an anti-swirl compound and follow-up with a carubra type wax. Don't be afraid to put some pressure behind these products, you can't remove much with them.

- I'd be careful about having any touch up on the door done (spray). Find a shop you really trust and does these sorts of cars. Metalitics are notoriously tough to deal with.

Good luck.

90 535iM Sharked and with a couple of small scratches and dings (it's easier that way) ;)

: it's a lovely spring day--so i decided to wash and wax the car...
: before waxing, i hit a few scratches and bug spatters with some
: very fine liquid polishing (not rubbing) compound...

: there was one little scratch between the bottom of the driver's
: side window and the top of the door handle that had been bugging
: me for a while--so i rubbed it ever so lightly for just a few seconds...
: BIG MISTAKE!

: the car is sterling silver (original paint in excellent to perfect condition)
: and i now have a dark gray spot about 1 inch wide by half an inch high...
: WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED?! i was told over the phone by Jon S.
: (who posts here every once in a great while) that i probably went through
: the clear coat...i have no idea how, because i've been using compound for
: years with no problems whatsoever...

: so...people...what can i do to fix the problem? is there a way to hit the spot
: with clear coat and wet sand to feather the edges into the existing clear coat?
: or is my only recourse to have the whole door sprayed or have it pinstriped?

: i would gladly accept the opinions of any professionals out there--and if you're
: in tennessee, you might get some work out of it...
