Steve:
My 89 525i is hard to start too. The car usually cranks for at least 5 seconds before it fires. A boss had an 89 325 that did the same thing. My car is well maintained with new filters, plugs, high-grade gas, etc. I even run a bottle of injector cleaner through it every couple of months. I've been told this engine, M20, has a history of this at higher mileage.
More of a nusiance(sp) than anything else, except for the extra wear and tear on the starter. Also a problem in the severe cold when the battery can't spin as long as needed to fire.

Good Luck
Steve C
