I experienced this same problem last summer as well. The speedometer (and cruise control) would not work for the first 10 - 20 miles. I was told it could be a pick up sensor in the rear differential or possibly an electronic board behind the dash that could be causing the problem ??
In my case the problem lasted for about one month (last August), and then it cleared up by itself ?? Approx 7 months & 10,000 miles have gone by without it happeneing again ???
