Seek some advice at other places than your official dealer.
I'm sure that the steering wheel can be changed, for an airbag type or a non-airbag type.
I talked at length with my dealer in Europe last year when I wanted a new steering wheel, and there never was talk about it being impossible to put one wheel or the other in my 1991 535i (non-airbag as standard).
Most of the times, it's a chore for the dealer to check what fits and what doesn't. Even they don't know all about the cars. I surprised my mechanic many times, and he knows his cars.
Be persistent, patient, and don't hesitate to go to the independents. I'm sure there is a solution that will not cost you an arm and a leg.
Good luck, George
: : Can any of you folks shed some light on the steering wheel below? What year it was used in ? Is it an airbag wheel ?
: : I would love to get one of these for my domestic 90 535i, any details would be great.
: : Thank You

: So from what I have gathered I am still stuck with the generic thin 4 spoke airbag wheel that came on my 90 535i. There is nothing from overseas that will bolt in its place airbag or not? The biggest issue I see is the depth of the wheel, all the control stalks are moved away and back to account for the depth of the airbag wheel. I was told that I would have to get a column out of an 89 non-airbag car to do any type of wheel swap.
