A leaking or malfunctioning strut will induce all kinds of weirdness into the handling of the car. I had a right front strut leaking and it took a bright light up on the rack to see it. I pulled the tire and with the suspension fully extended you can see through the spring if there is any leakage.

I have a 89 535i 98K exihibt the same behavior. Replaced the upper and lower control arms and bushings and installed new bilstein struts. This solved the problem and the car drives like new.
