Need CA info about defered adjudication (archive)

I got a ticket for "running a red" tonight, basically, I entered on the yellow, saw the cop, started moving over, he pulled out and moved to my lane, and I pulled over just after he turned on his lights. There wasn't anybody else on the road. I think I was legally correct, but you can't really argue about it in a courtroom against a cop. Anyhow, I have a clean record, so I was thinking about requesting defered adjudication. How does this work? Do I plead guilty or not? Will I still have the option of taking traffic school if denied? I'd appreciate any legal/anecdotal advice. Thanks.
