Baer,
My 1991 535i does the same kind of things. It upshifts to 4th, bypassing the "lockout" on 4th created when you select S-mode on the gearbox, when I reach redline, and not before.
It happens all the time at highway junctions when I floor it to have some fun out of the curves.
It isn't so bad, because under these circumstances, I look at the road, not the revcounter. It is an idiot proof measure, I guess. Works for me...
But in your case I have no clue why it would do that before redline. Were you giving full gas?

: I just ran with an e36 325i earlier tonight and as we were cruising I had my car in 3rd gear (S3). I hit about 120 and I felt the car up shift. What is the inflection point that the car will shift gears when place in (S3)? Is it redline that it will automatically shift??? At 100mph I was running about 5,000rpm and she felt really strong.
: I had three other people in my car at the time and I showed the stock e36 what my 5 could do. He couldn't keep up in the twisty highway on 128, north of Boston. Oh well, maybe that will inspire him for aftermarket gear.
