: ...local car lot has a 94 530i with ~87,000 miles on it: they're asking $17K.
: Can anyone advise on what to look at, and whether the price is reasonable? I'd definitely have it checked out by the local dealer before purchase, but I'm wondering if there are any problems with this year, etc.
Have the dealer do a leakdown test to check engine condition. M60 engines are susceptible to cylinder damage from high sulfur gas. Check out www.530i.org for details. If the dealer says the engine failed the leakdown test and is less than 6 years from in-service date, BUY the Car! You'll get a new engine short block for free under the BMW extended warranty. Also have the dealer check the car for fluid leaks which are common in these cars. Other than that, the '94 530 is a great car. I've had mine for 3 years and I love it. The price of $17K is reasonable if the car is in good condition. Otherwise negotiate for $15 - 16K. I got my engine block replaced for free at 37,000 mi - now have 65,000 mi.
