530 vs 535i (5 speed) (archive)

Of course this question has been asked before, but I did not see the answer on the forum, I do not know where the archives are.
Say you could choose beteern a 93 535i and 94 530 and the engine has already been replaced on the 530.
What would you do.
I think I am leaning towards the 535i. Proven technology, fairly simple, I am a heavy diy'er.
Any real benefits to the v-8???
