There is indeed a filter on the 4HP22, I have changed it myself. It is'nt very big, but when I took mine off an awful lot of crap came out of it. It isnt that big a job to replace it. I advise you to buy a new set of the 3 torx bolts that hold it up as they get stripped really easily. You will also find a lot of crud on the 2 magnets that are on the filter pan.
