Of course you will get a lot of biased opinions on this, including mine. The 530 engine is more refined and seems to have a better-designed cooling system. With the new block I would expect no serious problems at all.
535 - Proven technology? The 535 has proven to have head gasket and cooling issues. Check archives under "Archives" on e34 board. My impression is that the 535 has a more drivable powerband and responds better to chipping, but the 530 has that smooth V8 sound.
The 530 engine shows a few years of development over the 535 and makes that car the better choice.
