One thing about the 535i is that the M30 engine is relatively easy to work on. Lots of space and mechanically straight foreward. A plus if you're a do-it-yerselfer.
I drove both as I was shopping and found them similar. I think the 535i has more low end grunt while the 530i winds out better. I loved the sound of both - each has its own unique note. Personally, I enjoy the torque of the big six around town...it's easy to drive and you can choose to loaf in a real low gear or wrap it out - either way it's quite happy.
If you plan to own the car for a while, the 535i is likely a safer choice. The M30 engine has a solid history on going a long long way. The newer V8s have a well known history of block problems and less high mileage history. Either car is expensive to maintain compared to run of the mill transporation. Of course, the grin factor is much higher also.
Just some thoughts,
Good luck

: Of course this question has been asked before, but I did not see the answer on the forum, I do not know where the archives are.
: Say you could choose beteern a 93 535i and 94 530 and the engine has already been replaced on the 530.
: What would you do.
: I think I am leaning towards the 535i. Proven technology, fairly simple, I am a heavy diy'er.
: Any real benefits to the v-8???
