I moved up to 17" rims on my 95 525iT several months ago and I don't regret it a bit. There was very little degradation in ride quality, and a huge improvement in handling and looks (IMO).

Another fellow here went from 15" to 16" and I believe he's also very pleased ... he'll reply if he sees this message.

The roads in my area are, for the most part, well maintained and pretty smooth, so the 17" rims work out pretty well. If you're in an area with very rough roads, pot-holes, etc, then perhaps 16" would be best.
