I agree with Roger 100%. The power is very comparable between the two, but the V8 is MUCH smoother. I use the 530iT whenever we have a long highway trip. It's quiet, smooth and gets better gas mileage than the 535i. I prefer the 535i (5-speed) whenever the twisties beckon.

: I have both a 94 530i automatic with the original engine at 110 k miles, and an 89 535i 5 speed with 160 k miles. Love them both. The 530 is more of a luxury car in terms of appointments and ride but it still performs like an E34. The power difference between the six and eight is noticeable, even with a chip in the 535 but not the 530. The road feel of the 535 is more sport like. The 530 is my wife's, and the 535 is my daily driver year round. For fun I would get the 535, for nights out and comfortable traveling I'd get the 530.
