Be sure to get a Bosch replacement. I had a French-made OEM Valeo alternator in my 1992 525iA that was producing too high a voltage and causing the automatic transmission to go into the default limp-home in 3rd gear mode. The dash lights were brighter too! My very reputable independent BMW repair shop also feels the power from the Bosch unit is cleaner. There's so much electronics in the car that this is a factor.
