I've had the same troubles with my 88 735i which I believe I have fixed completely by now.

To make a long story really short, I ended up taking the roof panel completely out of the car to access the tracks for a good cleaning. What I found was that some of the old grease had become really hard and brittle making the track dry and burdensome for the motor. After a good cleaning and a fine adjustment to the roof it has never worked this good in a long time.
