Thanks for the insight. What was the performance boost like after adding the Conforti chip. Is it a DIY endeavor?

: A few thoughts about the two: Check to make sure that the Nikasil engine block has been replaced with an Alusil one. I would not buy one with a Nikasil block. Also, the automatic transmission requires more maintenence and is somewhat more fragile that the manual transmission. Other than those items, I do not think there is much difference in the maintenence expenses. Tha V8 has hydraulic valve lifters, which do not require any periodic adjustment. The V8 has a good deal more power than the six. However, the engine compartment is relatively crowded, making it more difficult to work on than the 525 six. BTW, I drive a 1994 530ia (with new engine block) and find it a very satisfying car to drive, with ample power (I installed a Conforti chip) and smoothness.

: : I have a BMW 525I (1989 5 speed) and looking at a 530I (1994 automatic). Can I expect the maintenance for the V8 to be significantly higher than the 6?
