Is the '91 535 a good buy--advice please? (archive)

I came across a '91 535i 5spd with 125k. I will be the 4 th owner. The vehicle seems to have been well maintained (synthetics only, primarily highway driven) with only cosmetic repairs (paint chips in hood, and door dings, no rust) The previous owner replaced a head gasket at 99k. The car has new front brakes, rotors and caps. The a/c does not work (how much to repair--the condesor leaks?)The car drives smoothly, does not pull, accelerates with out hesitation. The clutch was replaced at 120k. The interior is very clean, and everyhting else seems to work well. The previous owner said the rear trans leaked even after having the seals replaced--is this a problem?

The car will need new tires for winter, and probably new shocks all around. He is asking $12,000. Fair?

What other problems should I look for, and what additional repairs would you expect to develop/check?
