530iT Leaking valley pan gasket? (archive)

During recent shop servicing, the techs found a trail of coolant on the bellhousing and traced it to the valley gasket. How can coolant leak from here? The short block has been replaced but of course that work is out of warranty and the dealer who did the work quoted $600 to do the job. Can it be done at home? Nothing of use found in bentley for the V-8.
